First of all, before we get down to the nitty gritty of the Gellert baths, I want to walk you through a brief history. The Gellert baths are world famous and are visited by millions of people each year, they were built in the years between 1912 and 1918 in Art Nouveau style. The Gellert baths today remain one of the most beautiful baths in Budapest. There are references to healing properties within the water used in these baths can be traced back to the 15th century. The hot springs that supply the water to the baths are from deep within the Gellert Hill, today the springs and baths shine in their former glory after recent renovations.

Visit The Gellert Baths

I personally have been to the Gellert baths and know exactly why it is the most photographed spa in Hungary. The architect here got the baths spot on with the mosaic floors and walls within the main entrance, made by the Zsolnay factory. There are also stained glass windows and the wooden changing rooms are not short of fine details down to the last door handle!

The baths are also attached to a hotel but the entrance to the hotel and baths are different. The entrance to the right will provide you with access to the baths, you will be given a plastic armband along with your ticket once you have paid the fee. The feeds can vary depending on whether you want a locker or your own cabin, the fee for the locker for an adult on weekends is from 100-300 HUF. I you would like you own cabin this can cost anywhere from 400-600 HUF.

From my personal experience of the baths it is better to start in the thermal bathing area where the temperatures are toasty! The temperatures can be anywhere from 36 degrees (110 Fahrenheit) to 38 degrees (106 Fahrenheit). After a quick 20minutes you can then head off to the sauna’s, take a cold plunge after this. After a freezing cold plunge get back into the thermal area once again, then repeat. This is shown to have soothing effects and anti ageing properties.

Admission & Opening Times

• Adult ticket on weekdays, with locker 4 100 HUF
• Adult ticket on weekends, with locker 4 300 HUF
• Adult ticket on weekdays, with cabin 4 400 HUF
• Adult ticket on weekends, with cabin 4 600 HUF
• Child tickets from 2 600 to 2 800 HUF

The baths are open from 6AM until 8PM. All tickets are sold 1 hour before closing, guests should leave the pool areas 15 minutes before closing to allow time to get dried off and dressed.

My name is Luke, I visited Hungary on my backpacking tour around the world and stopped off at the Gellert Baths. I used GuestDoor.com for a lot of my bookings for hotels and cheap places to stay. The Gellert baths are amazing and I would definitely love to visit them again!
